23"(58 cm.) Wax portrait doll,his head inclined upward,painted brown side-glancing eyes in
deeply-set sockets,closed mouth with firmly set lips and jaw,padded armature body with
elongated limbs,and having wrapped crepe paper costume of football player with "5"on shirt
front,blue and gold shirt colors,and painted shoe laces. The doll is mounted on its original
display stand,pencil lettered "D"on the underside. Condition: generally excellent,small ding on
nose. Comments: from a series of celebrity dolls created to represent American films during their
release,this doll likely was created for the 1931 film "The Spirit of Notre Dame",inspired by the
legendary football coach Knute Rockne; the doll is wearing the blue and gold Notre Dame colors.
Value Points: well-preserved one-of-a-kind doll with artistic facial sculpting and painting.
