13"(33 cm.) and 14". Each has composition head with painted facial features,side glancing eyes,closed mouth,painted long curly lashes,muslin body with jointing at shoulders and hips,composition hands; one with sculpted bobbed hair and shoulder plate and wearing original knit turtleneck and plaid pants,shoes and socks,and having two early Jackie Coogan celluloid pins; and the other with flanged neck,brunette mohair wig,green knit turtleneck,plaid pants,shoes and socks,and two celluloid pins. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: E.I.H. c. 1914 (dolls). Jackie Coogan Kid,Licensed by Jackie Coogan,Patent Pending (cloth label on costume of each). Comments: rare pair of portrait dolls depicting the child star known popularly as The Kid",one with autograph at back "To Billie,Jackie Coogan". Jackie Coogan (1914-1984),began in vaudeville,was discovered by Charlie Chaplin and played his sidekick in the 1927 silent film,"The Kid"from which he earned his nickname,and was the star of the 1928 silent film "Oliver Twist". During the 1920s he appeared in more than 20 films. His name and persona were licensed and heavily-promoted into a variety of products including dolls such as this pair issued by Horsman. Value Points: well-preserved dolls with original costumes,autograph,variations of style.
