Description
9" (23 cm.) Each is all terra cotta with socket
head,painted hair,large blue painted side-glancing
googly eyes,painted long upper
lashes,button-shaped nose,closed mouth with little
pursed lips and extended laughing lip
line,five-piece terra cotta body,painted shoes and
socks. Condition: very good,original finish with
some typical minor wear. Marks: Paris (head).
Comments; designed by the French artist,Hansi and
distributed by J.P. Gallais & Cie,the dolls were
created in 1917 to celebrate the return of Alsace
to French control; the dolls were presented at the
Concours des Poupees in Paris in 1917 and received
a First Prize. Value Points: wearing the original
costumes of Alsatian boy and girl,including
original Alsatian coiffe with French flag
emblem,each carries a cardboard slateboard with
their name and "Vive la France". The boy Yerri
carries a French flag,while Gretel carries a
parasol,and each is presented in its original box
with printed illustration of the doll by Hansi on
the lid.
