Description
23" (58 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged
bisque shoulder plate,slender elongated
face,almond-shaped blue glass enamel inset
eyes,dark eyeliner,painted lashes and brows,shaded
nostrils,closed mouth with pale accented lips
having enigmatic smiling expression,pierced
ears,kid gusset-jointed body with square-cut
collarette,wooden arms with dowel-jointing at
shoulders,elbows and wrists,lovely silk costume.
Condition: generally excellent,old retouch to
arms. Marks: J. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru,circa
1872,the model is considered a portrait of the
Empress Eugenie. Bru considered this facial model
so significant that he took the unusual step of
having the model deposed in his name. Value
Points: superb modeling,bisque,and painting on the
portrait poupee,in very rare larger size,with
original body. June Ellen Lane acquired the doll
from the Lenore Thomas collection,and it is also
photographed in Mildred Seeley's book,How to
Collect French Fashions.
