Description
19" (48 cm.) Parian-like bisque bust of an adult woman at attached bisque pedestal, her head inclined to the side with sculpted heavily-lidded downcast eyes and closed mouth modeled as though open with a row of sculpted teeth, sculpted long flowing brown hair beneath a sculpted rose bonnet with ruffled edge and long streamers, sculpted necklace and a bisque rose that is modestly tucked in the falling bodice of her decorated blouse. Condition: generally excellent, small flake on hat ruffle. Marks: Lemaire (large incised letters at the back). Comments: the bust was sculpted by prominent French artist,Hector Lemaine and created by Henri Ardant & Cie; the piece can be precisely dated 1883/1885,during the two years that Lemaire designed for the Ardant firm.
