Description
16" (41 cm.) Paper mache swivel head with very
plump cheeks and chin,brown enamel inset eyes in
half-moon shape,large sculpted ears,painted
features,open mouth,defined double-chin,black
human hair,paper mache upper and lower torso,cloth
midriff and upper arms and legs,wooden lower arms
and legs,paper mache hands and feet with
well-defined fingers and toes; the doll is
loosely-jointed to simulate the body construct of
a young child. Condition: the larger doll is
excellent,the smaller doll is scuffed. Comments:
Japanese,late-19th century,the model influenced
the development of the European child doll after
its introduction at mid-19th century international
trade fairs. Value Points: rare model with
wonderfully-characterized features,original
costume,carrying its own small play doll of same
construction.
