Description
20" (51 cm.) All-wooden doll with socket and dowel-jointed head allowing the head to turn side-to-side, or pivot up and down, slender shaped face with high-domed forehead and strong aristocratic nose shape, deeply-defined heavy eyelids, lips carved slightly open with defined tiny carved teeth, all wooden-body with shapely slender torso, dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, separately-carved posed fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Oberammergau region of Europe, early-1700s, although the specific history of this doll remains a mystery, it is certain, based upon the very rare luxury carving of head and articulation, and particularly upon the extraordinary costume, that the doll was created to represent a particular member of aristocracy or royalty. Value Points: perfectly preserved, its costume never removed, the regal doll is remarkably costumed in every detail from the fully lined petticoat to the gold metallic embroidery on both gown and fitted cap, and including the early three-piece jewelry and wooden-heeled slippers.
