Description
5" (13 cm.) Each is all-bisque with swivel head,sculpted hair,painted facial features,jointing at
shoulders and hips,and brown painted shoes; including Max with black bobbed hair,blue left
side-glancing eyes,button-shaped nose,wide-impish smile on thin-line lips,pointing right
finger and spread fingers on right hand; and Moritz with red hair in prominent topknot curl
and side curls,blue right side-glancing eyes,pointy nose,closed mouth with watermelon-
slice-shaped smile,thumb-up on right hand,pointing finger on left hand. Condition: generally
excellent. Comments: Kestner,circa 1920,the pair represent Max and Moritz from the
character stories written by Wilhelm Busch in the mid-19th century,and later popularized in
America at the beginning of the 20th century in the comic strip series,"The Katzenjammer
Kids". The exact doll is shown in the book The History and Art of Googlies,p.147. Value
Points: rare characters with delightful expression,perfectly preserved including topknot and
pointing fingers,and even wearing their factory-original costumes which are very rare to find.
