Description
More than 225 various Rewards of Merit are
presented (unglued) in an album; since most were
awarded to meritous students on particular
occasions they can be dated easily. This album has
examples as early as 1800,many examples from the
1835-1865 era,and some few later 19th century.
Examples range from handmade with Spenserian
writing to colored engravings to faux-bank
notes,to proverbial writings. Rewards of Merit
were given by teachers to students that performed
well in their studies or exhibited good behavior
in the class room. This album is an extremely rare
gathering of early examples,and in its totality is
both charming and poignant.
