Description
40àw. x 15àh. x 16àd. (and 5à d. of alcove). A finely-grained wooden room box with
mahogany finish showcases two rooms, and is trimmed with ogee-shaped floor front and
ceiling edges, and well-detailed pilasters. The larger room has a set-back alcove in unusual
three-sided shape, perhaps designed as a stage for performances or musicians, that is framed
with an elaborate fretwork cornice and spindled railing, and reached by three graduated-
length steps. The tongue and groove wainscot rises above a paneled border that extends
around the room, and the upper walls have original paper with a paper border of abstract
butterflies. A tall paneled double door leads to the second room, and has a decorative cornice
that matches the original window cornices; there are three sets of double windows that open
at the center. The bedroom wallpaper is original and the floors have original lithographed
paper in geometric designs. Some early framed engravings hang on the walls, the bedroom
has an old carpet, and there is a matched table and two chairs that appear original to the
house. The parlor curtains,of rose silk with applique gold trim are original. Excellent
condition, some spotting on wall and floor paper. Germany, attributed to Johann Gottfried
August Hermann, circa 1900,the room box was featured in their 1904 catalog as model 358/1
