Description
13" (33 cm.) All-wooden carved polychromed figure of elderly man, bald pate with long flowing brown curls at sides and back of head, and very full untrimmed beard, inset enamel eyes, slightly-parted lips in downcast manner, teeth, defined age lines and gaunt cheeks, one-piece head and torso, mortise and tenon-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, wearing original ragged and patched costume of beggar or mendicant. Condition: generally excellent. Genoese, mid-1700s, attributed to the workshop of Pasquale Navone whose work included not only classical sculpting, but also creation of presepio, both in smaller size as this example, and in life-size mannequin size.
