Description
43" l. x 17"h. x 17"d. A grand wooden doll house with two large rooms features original
wood-grained finish on the exterior, and alcove at the back of the salon with large stained
glass window with elaborately painted design. The double doors leading to the outside have
upper-windows,and the double doors between the two rooms are richly paneled, each is made
of tinplate with faux-wood-grained finish; the tall windows in each room are also tin-framed
and hinge open inwardly. Each window has original wooden cornice and antique curtains. The
salon floor is lithographed paper over wood, and the bedroom floor is wood. The bedroom has
original floral-printed wall paper, and the salon walls are uniquely and originally covered with
applique panels over wall paper on the upper portion, and a superb pressed-cardboard
wainscoting to simulate carved wood; finally,a gilded pressed-cardboard border edges the
ceiling line and the wainscoting. Attached to the side of the house is a lithographed tin
gazebo in shades of turquoise, red and gold, with painted tin floor to simulate a summer
carpet. The gazebo has fret-work sides,fleur-de-lis roof line, and contains four potted tall
plants. Excellent condition. Germany, circa 1880,the very rare house was commissioned by
Maerklin and fitted with its tinplate doors, windows, and gazebo. Other rarity factors include
stained glass window in alcove, original cornices, and pressed-cardboard wainscoting.
