Description
17" (43 cm.) Wooden shoulderhead with U-shaped breastplate, is posed with uptilted head, her carved hair waved from her face, behind her fully-sculpted ears, and arranged into an elaborately-looped braid, inset brown enamel eyes, closed mouth, modeled bosom, dowel-attached to shapely wooden torso and legs, mortise and tenon-jointing at shoulders and elbows, painted blue stockings and black shoes, simple country costume. Condition: generally excellent. Mid-1700s, possibly Genoese, the model is highly suggestive of the ship figurehead trade of that city, and is notable for unusual construction and extraordinary coiffure.
