Description
19" (48 cm.) Standing upon a tapestry-covered and tassel-trimmed wooden base is a bisque-
head doll with sobbing expression, having narrow blue eyes as though squinting,artfully-
painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils of rounded nose, closed mouth modeled as
though open with accented lips, row of sculpted teeth, pierced ear, blonde mohair wig over cork
pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. The doll is holding a bisque head
of Polichinelle in her hands, with its broken body on the ground. When wound, she turns her
head side to side as though looking for help, while lifting her doll and its broken body up and
down, crying; music plays. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 211 (incised) Tete Jumeau Bte
SGDG 4 (red stamp). L.D. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890,with exclusive
character model face commissioned from Emile Jumeau. Value Points: the rare and
wonderfully realistic childhood scene is perfectly captured, enhanced by its perfectly preserved
costume, accessories, beautiful bisque, and even the original glass tear at the child's eye.
