Description
17" (43 cm.) Paper mache head of highly-characterized man with enamel glass eyes,sculpted
brows and dominant nose,hinged jaw with jagged teeth,fleeced hair under knit stocking
cap,rounded paper mache torso with barrel-shaped lower torso,short plump legs,wire upper
arms,metal hands. The man has an internal mechanism which,when wound,causes him to turn
head,open and close mouth as he lifts the paper mache stein to his mouth,while rubbing his
stomach in satisfaction with his other hand. Meanwhile music plays. Condition: generally
excellent,mechanism and music function well. Marks: G. Vichy Paris Modele Depose (brass
plaque on barrel). Comments: Gustav Vichy,circa 1890. Value Points: very rare and wonderful
automaton with maker's insignia,in original well-detailed silk and knit costume,very
expressive facial sculpting,amusing antics.
