Description
16" (41 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-lined bisque shoulder plate with alternate faces and
modeled ears on either side of head; the alternate face being revealed by swivel movement of
the head. One face is a classic poupee model with cobalt enamel glass eyes,painted lashes
and brows,and the other face is "sleeping" with modeled closed eyes,painted lower eyeliner
and lower lashes,feathered brows,accented nostrils and eye corners,closed mouth with
slightly-smiling expression,kid fashion body with shapely torso,wooden articulated arms with
dowel-jointing at shoulders elbows and wrists. Condition; generally excellent. Comments:
Leon Casimir Bru who registered a "brevete d'invention" for this double-faced doll in 1868; in
this patent the two models of the face were specifically illustrated as well as the rotating
device (see The Bru Book,by Theimer,page 30). Value Points: extremely rare early fashion
model with original Bru body,superb bisque,wearing antique blue silk gown with matching
front and back designed to accommodate the display of either face,unique bonnet with
uptilted brim at front and back.
