Description
10" (25 cm.) l. The lithographed tin mechanical auto has orange-painted sides and red
roof,ñshingledî doghouse motor compartment,colorful wheels,pennants with location
names, and is decorated in a delightfully amusing manner: a clothesline with over-sized
bloomers on the roof,a kitchen stove and scrub bowl at the back, and a dog that pops his head
in and out of the motor compartment. Driving the auto is Henry with blue jacket, orange cap
and beard, and a buxom lady passenger with polka-dotted red dress. The car is labeled ñHi-
Way Henry, copyrighted by Oscar Hitt',was produced by Nifty in Germany for Borgfeldt, circa
1925; the toy seems to have been inspired by the figures of The Katzenjammer Kids comic
strip. Although Oscar Hitt did not create that strip,he did draw for it for some time,as well as
design board games that drew upon the Hi-Way Henry theme. Included with this toy is a Hi-
Way Henry board game (incomplete) with vibrant colorful box and game board. The rare toy is
excellent,lithography well-preserved,and mechanism functioning well.
