Description
14" (36 cm.) h. 18" overall length including trunk. A paper-mache elephant with kidskin cover
has hidden hinged legs,wide ears,extended trunk,and silk fringed blanket. Seated upon the
elephant is a brown-complexioned bisque child with brown glass eyes,mohair lashes,open
mouth,teeth,black fleecy hair,original silk costume with metallic trim. When the elephant is
wound,he lumbers slowly forward,while flapping his ears and raising and lowering his trunk;
meanwhile the driver leans forward and backward. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1079
S&H Germany (doll). Comments: Roullet et Decamps,circa 1900,a very rare variation of their
walking elephant automaton; with the added feature of brown-complexioned driver,flapping
ears and moving trunk. Value Points: luxury toy is all-original and functions well.
