Description
24" (61 cm.) Paper-mache socket head depicting young child has deeply modeled
features,pale blue glass enamel eyes,sculpted ears,painted features,closed mouth with sad
expression on lips,brunette mohair wig,five piece paper-mache body with curled
fingers,wearing superb antique baby costume including very fine antique woven bonnet.
Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French,circa 1875,maker unknown although the
facial model and bebe body styling suggest an early attempt at creation of bebe-style doll by
Schmitt et Fils; the doll is shown in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer on page 445.
Value Points: extremely rare doll of significance in the evolution of the doll,its rarity rivaled by
its compelling presence,originality,costume,and its original wooden trunk with hand-
decorated flowers and birds,decorative paper lining and beautiful original paper label "Aux
Colonies Francaises,Canu,Rue de la Savonnerie 26,Rouen,Marchande Coffretien,Layetien".
