Description
3" (8 cm.) x 4" painting. 7" x 9" frame. A miniature painting depicts the interior of a fine luxury
goods shop, with shelves of porcelain vases and urns in the background. Seated on a stool in the
foreground is a fashionably dressed young lady who is fanning herself, and appears to be
choosing a porcelain vase from the luxury offerings. Her little sister, also beautifully
costumed, stands in front,as though anxiously awaiting the decision. Signed L.L. French, circa
1885,by artist Luigi Loir, from the family̴s original archives. The artist was celebrated for his
Parisian genre scenes, and was commissioned on occasion to create art work for a series of trade
cards for luxury goods stores; these trade cards can sometimes be found today but the original
art is virtually unknown.
