Description
18" (46 cm.) Bisque socket head with full cheeks,brown glass paperweight inset eyes,dark eyeliner,painted lashes,brush-stroked and multi-feathered brows,accented eye corners,shaded nostrils,closed mouth with full outlined lips,pierced ears,blonde mohair wig,cork pate,French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body,straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent,original body finish with light scuffing,body is appropriate and of the correct era,but may not be original. Marks: 1 H (incised). Comments: Aristide Halopeau,circa 1885,successor to the Barrois firm. The story of the Halopeau bebes,whose production was extremely small,accounting for their rarity today,is told in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer. Value Points: very rare doll with compelling expression enhanced by fine details such as tiny tongue tip,lovely painting,and wearing wonderful early silk costume. Few models are known to exist.
