Description
10" (25 cm.) A carved-bone folding fan with 17 blades embellished with carving and gold
painted flowers supports a splendid paper canvas with hand-painted scenes on each side, one
side depicting a young lady and gentleman in romantic country setting. The other
side, however is the primary scene, and of particular relevance to doll collectors; it depicts a
scene of an itinerant doll merchant offering his dolls to an enthralled group of on-lookers. He
leans forward as though to show the doll he is holding, while two ladies and an eager child
reach for the doll. Another lady sits calmly in the background,a gentleman stands impatiently
nearby (obviously unimpressed),and a fourth lady kneels behind the man at his open trunk of
dolls, pulling out her own particular favorite doll. There are 7 figures, two dolls, and a trunk
with other toys and dolls visible. Excellent condition of fan and painting,in original worn paper
box. French,early 19th century
