Description
4" (10 cm.) A homespun cloth doll with finely
stitched facial features and carved wooden hands
is entirely costumed in attached costume made of
tightly-woven tiny beads in a design to simulate
fabric pattern, with beaded "stockings" and little
beaded heeled shoes. The doll is preserved in an
early wooden truck with paper cover in a floral
design. Condition: good,face darkened,some general
age wear. Comments: an attached old ink script
note reads "Charles II doll of beads and
wood...Miss De Witt C. (indecipherable),Nov
27,"45",presumably the date that the doll was
donated to the Museum; a similar note is attached
to the doll trunk suggesting that the trunk has
been the constant home of the doll for several
centuries. Note: Charles II ruled England from
1630-1685. Value Points: a wonderful early mystery
doll with intriguing historical clues.
