Description
16" (41 cm.) Paper-mache shoulder head with
elongated very strong throat,black sculpted hair
with deep comb-marks that is arranged in
center-part and waved gracefully over the ears
into a tightly braided chignon very low at the
nape of her neck,fully sculpted ears,painted large
brown eyes,brows,nostril accents,closed mouth with
solemn expression,slender kid body with wooden
lower limbs,painted yellow shoes. She is wearing a
fine early cotton skirth with brown wheat pattern
and silk fitted jacket,and undergarments.
Condition: original finish with craquelure.
Comments: Germany,circa 1850. Value Points: very
rare coiffure,most compelling expression with
large eyes,early costume. In an article written
for Antique Doll Collector in 2001,Margaret
Hartshorn remarked about this doll,"When I bought
this doll [in 1974] my friend asked me why I would
buy such a crackled old doll. I answered,"She"s
rare,you"ll see". The next year she won a blue
ribbon at UFDC."
