Description
14" (36 cm.) Carved wooden ovoid-shaped head with
defined throat,high forehead,strong nose,and
well-detailed ears is dowel-attached to shapely
torso which has shapely bosom above a sculpted
bodice,tiny waist and flared hips,dowel-jointing
at shoulders,elbows,hips and knees,shapely calves
and tiny ankles. The head,bosom,and limbs have
varnished polychrome finish with brown upper
glancing eyes,and her feet have unusual painted
yellow slippers with red soles and edging.
Condition: very good,original finish and painted
features with normal rubs. Comments:
Continental,probably Flemish,late 18th century.
Value Points: very rare neck jointing allowing the
head to tilt up and down,and slightly
side-to-side,wonderful carving highlighted by
nose,ears,shape of head and torso,and including
her original homespun petticoat,silk quilted
petticoat,and hand-stitched fitted stays.
Ex-collection Dorothy Dixon,the lady was one of
the last dolls acquired by Margaret Hartshorn.
