Description
12" (30 cm.) and 9". Each is made of hand-carved
wood with distinctive facial features,the
brown-complexioned woman being highly
characterized having small painted brown eyes,high
cheek bones,broad nose,full lips and prominent
ears,and the ebony-complexioned boy with unique
bead and pearl-button eyes,and carved open mouth
with three carved teeth. She has a one-piece
wooden head,body and legs,with cloth upper arms
and wooden lower arms,and is wearing her faded
print cotton dress,apron and bandana; and he has
one piece wooden head and torso,with wooden limbs
jointed at the shoulders,hips and knees,and is
wearing his original cotton plaid shirt and pants.
Condition: generally excellent,left foot front
broken on boy,three fingers chipped on woman.
Comments: American,folk art,mid-19th century.
Value Points: superb detail of portraiture on the
woman with artistic detail of carving,original
costumes and fine original painting on both.
