14" (36 cm.) Bisque socket head depicting wistful street urchin,small brown glass eyes,shaded blush around the sunken eye sockets,lightly tinted brows,tiny nose with nostril accents,closed mouth with extended accent line between the lips,original carrot red mohair wig,five-piece paper mache body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: SFBJ 239 Paris (incised) Poulbot (signature incised). Comments: SFBJ,circa 1916,the uniquely sculpted doll was designed by respected French illustrator Poulbot as an element of his charity work for the WWI urchins of Montmartre in Paris; the doll was offered in Paris department store Etrennes catalogs for two years only. Value Points: very rare character with poignant expression and provenance,in its original store costume.
