13" (33 cm.) Carved wooden head with well defined sculpted features,painted strong
brows,eyes,lips,short broad nose,ears,painted black pate with defined carving of coiled
queue,muslin body,wooden lower arms and legs,bare wooden feet,hands posed for holding an
object. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Chinese Door of Hope mission
doll,representing Change the Chinese Farmer" according to inventory papers which described
him as carved from wood like ivory by a master Chinese craftsman" and having gentle
impassive features",circa 1925. Value Points: rare model wearing perfectly preserved original
costume of woven straw over blue denim work suit,woven hat. The doll was acquired by the
Cleveland Museum of Art in 1937.
