Description
11" (28 cm.) Each has carved wooden head with defined facial features,tinted features,elongated
oval-shaped head,firmly stuffed muslin body,wooden hands,the Bride with carved black hair in
chignon decorated with a scalloped pink comb and gold clip,and the Groom with neat side-
parted painted hair. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Door of Hope,Shanghai,early
period work,circa 1910,representing Traditional Bride and Groom. Value Points: superb original
costuming,the Bride with three layers of tunics,two in rich red silk satin,matching lined skirt over
blue pants,red slippers for bound feet,and elaborately beaded headdress and beaded tassels on
tunics; the Groom with purple silk long jacket over golden robe,leggings,purple boots,tasseled
cap with attached queue. The pair was acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1922.
