Description
4" (10 cm.) - 6". Each is full wax figure of black woman or boy or girls with sculpted hair and
painted facial features,wearing well-detailed cotton costumes,with accessories and mounted on
original wooden stands. Marks: Genuine Vargas New Orleans,La. (stamp on bases). Condition:
generally excellent. Comments: the wax portrait miniatures of local black residents were created
by the Vargas family of New Orleans,early 20th century. The dolls were costumed in richly
colored cotton fabrics and then the entire doll and costume were lightly wax dipped to appear as
though the entire doll was of wax. Value Points: rare dolls in pristine original condition,including
woman with basket of buns,and three children with fruit or cotton.
