11" (28 cm.) One piece carved wooden head and torso portraying a noble black traveler with deeply sculpted black hair,sculpted facial features in realistic manner,brown painted eyes,broad nose,full lips,strong jaw line,all-wooden limbs with dowel jointing at shoulders,elbows,hips and knees,painted black boots. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: early 19th century,Tyrol (Austria/Germany). Value Points: superb original condition of the artfully carved figure,dowel- jointed limbs,very lavish and well preserved original silk and velvet costume with metallic threads. The figure was acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1928.
