Description
10" (25 cm.) Wood or wood-composition kneeling gosho-ningyo with overall fine shell white
(gofun) has delightfully rendered face with bright expression,slightly open mouth and painted
features,and well-carved body form with additional details including knee dimples and
expressive hands,the left hand extended with palm flat and the right hand in a grasping
gesture. The forehead is decorated with an auspicious painted presentation ribbon (mizuhiki)
and has elaborately painted side locks with additional painted tie ribbons. Condition: overall
very good,cracking and lifting to gofun on legs and back. Comments: Japanese,Edo
period,early 19th century,wearing a fitted silk crepe haragake bib tied at neck and waist and
having embroidered New Year's pin bough design and additional painted sacred treasure
designs including key to the treasure house,axe head,scrolls,and stylized horn pair. Value
Points: rare and desirable early gosho-ningyo with painted presentation ribbons and fine
original costume.
