13" (33 cm.) Lady doll with wooden composite (toso) head covered in shell white (gofun) with painted details and inset glass eyes,silk fiber hair tied in a classic mage chignon with paper ties,silk crepe and painted paper ribbons and silk flowers,forearms and hands carved of wood and covered in gofun with arms attached to body with wire to allow for positioning,hands depicted in slightly open position to hold an accessory such as flowering branch. Condition: generally excellent,minor discoloration to gofun. Comments: Japan,Meiji era,circa 1900,the bijin-ningyo or fashion doll of Kyoto have been the quintessential Kyoto souvenir since the 18th century. Value Points: wearing long kosode-kimono with padded hem,executed in a purple paste-resist with various flowers and leaf design,with front slightly open at hemline to expose tea,secured at waist with broad red silk brocade obi with large chrysanthemum design.
