Description
8" (20 cm.) The standing gosho-ningyo with head, torso and legs crafted from a single piece
of wood is covered overall with a fine shell white (gofun),sexed with slightly distended
belly, painted facial features, thick silk fiber hair executed in a dragonfly (tonbo) hairstyle
indicative of a court page (chigo); separately carved moveable arms attached to the body by a
wire that is covered in a padded silk crepe (chirimen),with left hand open and right hand
depicted in a grasping position for holding a fan or flower spray, wearing a figured silk
kosodo kimono. Condition: some lifting and losses to gofun, some loss of pigment.
Comments: Japanese Edo period,pre-1868,though most gosho-ningyo were crafted as
display dolls, figures with padded wire arms frequently came with multiple changes of clothing
and are considered much closer to the Western sense of play doll. Value Points: charming
early period child in appealing size with well crafted details.
