16" (41 cm.) The fully carved and sexed figure,covered overall in shell white (gofun),is posed
in a broad stance with left leg extended slightly forward and arms fixed in a raised position
with right and left hands in grasping gesture through which a rope (missing) would have
passed attached to a cart or other auspicious object; with slightly uplifted face having
exceptionally well rendered chin crease,slightly open mouth revealing upper teeth and narrow
painted eyes,and having a bold mizuhiki presentation ribbon painted on forehead with
additional painted side locks with tie ribbons. Condition: facial foxing and soiling,some chips
and losses to gofun,textile fading. Comments: Japanese,Edo Period,early 19th century,the
gosho wears a lined figured silk long outer sleeveless coat with bold paste resist plum
blossom designs and scattered blossoms rendered in embroidery over a rich red
embroidered haragake bib with embroidered and applied designs of playing Akita puppies.
Value Points: large and early gosho-ningyo Palace Doll with painted presentation
ribbons,superb costume.
