Description
15" (38 cm.) Depicting a young girl with separately formed toso wood composite head
covered in a slightly pigmented shell white (gofun) with painted features,inset glass eyes,and
bright expression,and classic ichimatsu body. Her silk fiber hair is in the tradition okappa
style with severe front bangs,and she wears a dramatic and unusual black kimono with finely
executed yuszen paste resist images of flying red headed cranes,secured at the waist with silk
brocade obi featuring repeated dragon roundels with a silk crepe obi-age,hakoseko,and other
traditional accessories. Marks (paper label on body bearing the artist seal and characters
"Shyunsai"). Condition: generally excellent,minor discoloration to gofun. Comments:
Japanese,Showa era,1930s,the original wooden box is included. Value Points: within the
traditional Japanese ranking of ichimatsu-ningyo,there are 5 primary quality rankings; signed
pieces such as this are considered among the finest.
