Description
7" (18 cm.) Carved plump gosho-ningyo,covered overall in fine shell white (gofun) finish is
depicted seated with both legs forward,both hands in a grasping gesture which would have
originally held an auspicious object,sexed; the face with closed mouth expression and frank
regard looking directly at the viewer,inserted silk fiber hair (possibly replaced). The gosho is
wearing a lacquered paper court-style cap (kanmuri) secured with purple silk cords and a
figured silk haragake bib with simple gold-wrapped thread embroidered designs. Condition:
very good,minor cracks and foxing. Comments: Japanese,Edo period,1st half of 19th century.
Value Points: classic eboshi-capped gosho is presented in his original wooden presentation
box with Japanese inscription translated to "naked gosho doll wearing a court cap" (Izukura
kanmuri hadaka ningyo).
