17" (43 cm.) Having composite wood (toso) head covered in a slightly pigmented shell white (gofun) to emphasize his savagery,largish inset glass eyes,painted features and silk fiber hair,the ningyo is depicted seated. Condition: very good condition,abrasion to forehead,right hand damaged,missing wrist guard and stool. Comments: Japan,Late Edo.early Meiji era,mid 19th century,the figure depicts Kato Kiyomasa,the notorious late 18th century samurai (1562-1611) and was a classic figure of Boy's Day displays. Value Points: the grand-sized ningyo wears classic costume lacquered paper armor,chased metal fittings,silk brocade textiles,faux tiger pelt sword and fur boots done in the keuesaiku technique,and signature conical helmet with lace neck protector.
