Description
11" (28 cm.) The two largest are all wooden with swivel head,block torso,dowel-jointing at
shoulders,elbows,hips and knees,and the smaller all wooden except wire armature at upper arms
and legs. Each with superb deep carving and oil-painting of hair and facial features to depict
highly characterized individuals,and each is wearing its original costume and with original
wooden stand. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Tyrol (Germany/Austria),early 19th
century. The dolls were acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1928 and represent villagers
from an elaborate commissioned crib scene. Value Points: outstanding quality of sculpting and
artistic painting,well-detailed costumes.
