Description
21" (53 cm.) overall length. A wooden delivery van with painted-spoke wheels is attached to a
flat-dimensional horse with painted harness details and horsehair tail. The wagon is painted
original black and lettered in red and gold "Sheffield Farms Company,The National Dairy Milk"
and "524 W. 57th St" on two sides and roof. Inside the van are two metal milk carriers, each
with six glass milk bottles with raised lettering "Sheffield". Excellent condition. Circa
1900,during the early years of the 20th century Sheffield was considered one of the two major
dairy firms in New York City, and their large establishments provided not only equipment for
storing the milk shipped daily from upstate New York, but also provided stables for the horses
that served as delivery animals to city homes. This toy was a promotional advertising object
presented by the company during those heyday years.
