34" (86 cm.) Bisque socket head, blue glass sleep eyes, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, shaded lips, four porcelain teeth, brunette mohair wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body. Condition: long hairline on forehead, body and costume excellent. Marks: H Made in Germany 17 146 (head) Excelsior (body). Comments: Kestner,circa 1915, the doll wears his original custom-made early football costume comprising leather head guard, blue woolen turtleneck, padded leggings with lace front, leather ankle guards, leather belt and shoes. An accompanying note reads "He was purchased from the Blackburn estate...Mrs. Blackburn had bought him in 1916 and had paid $40 for him. He had been dressed by a football outfitting concern and used as a display piece in a window...". Value Points: wonderful doll in very rare and authentic costume, with provenance.
