4.5" (11 cm.) x 3" painting. 8" x 9" framed. A miniature gouache painting with hints of impressionistic style depicts a fashionably dressed young girl in red dress and bonnet, clasping her little doll dressed in an identical blue costume, plucking cherries from a nearby branch. The painting is signed L.L. Circa 1885. The Austrian-born French painter (1845-1916) was only 20 years of age when he first exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1865. Scenes of life in Paris, particularly in miniature, and particularly featuring children, were his specialty for the next half-century and he was awarded medals of honor at numerous exhibitions including the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris. Superb original condition, the painting was sold from the original atelier of the French painter Luigi Loir before its acquisition for the Baker Collection.
