Description
15" (38 cm.) Paper mache head with flanged neck depicting a
sleeping black-complexioned baby,having sculpted short hair
with very tight curls,sculpted closed eyes with painted lower
lashes,modeled thick brows with black painted details,broad
rounded nose,very full lips of closed mouth,midnight brown
muslin body,composition lower limbs,antique baby dress and
antique patchwork quilt. Condition: generally excellent. Marks:
LM (head) Danny 1919 (handwritten tag stitched to chest).
Comments: attributed to Leo Moss,the itinerant handyman who
is believed to have created the series of black children
representing youngsters from his Georgia home town,some
representing his own children,at the beginning of the 20th
century. Value Points: artful and endearing portrait of sleeping
child is beautifully preserved.
