Description
14" (36 cm.) Heavy paste paper mache Polichinelle with sculpted
definition of classic front and back humps,has swivel head and
peg-jointed arms and legs,sculpted facial features and bi-corn
hat,sculpted costume including ruffled collar and
buttons,sculpted fancy upturned shoes. Condition: generally
excellent,some typical paint fading lending a pleasing patina.
Comments: maker unknown,mid-19th
century,French,Polichinelle was the most popular French
legendary or theatrical figure throughout the 19th century,and
numerous presentations were made each year in Etrennes
holiday store catalog. This mid-19th century example is shown
in the book Etrennes by Florence Theriault. Value Points:
Polichinelle in a rare hard paste model with wonderfully painted
features is presented in a carved wooden throne chair with
original finish.
