Carved wooden head and torso, egg-shaped head, elongated strong throat, modeled bosom and tiny waist, flat back torso, black enamel inset eyes with dot-painted lashes and brows, distinctively carved nose, blush spots on cheeks, painted mouth with center accent line, wooden lower arms with separately carved fingers, cloth upper arms, wooden dowel- jointed legs, wearing early silk gown with attached stomacher, hemp wig, and carrying early carved bone fan with silk blades. Condition: generally very good, some restoration to forehead and left side of face (under wig),and gesso worn at back of head under the wig. Comments: English, late 18th century, the doll was previously owned by Ruth and Robert Mathes, and appeared in their book, Dolls, Toys and Childhood, page 56, before being acquired by Geri Baker. Value Points: grand size of the early wooden lady with well-defined features artfully clustered at the center face.
