Description
39"(99 cm.) A decorative table centerpiece having finely cast
bronze frame with rich original mercury gilding is decorated by
four Sevres porcelain plaques that surround the base, each
depicting a romantic couple in differing scenes. Three graduated
size lead-crystal trays with fluted design (unsigned but likely
Baccarat) rise to the finial which is a painted tole
pineapple, symbol of prosperity. When the pineapple is opened
the surprise "bird"appears, turning its head from side to
side, beak opening and closing, and singing its melodious bird
songs, with controls for both intermittent and continuous play.
Condition: excellent, the bronze, crystal and porcelain perfectly
preserved,the mechanism functioning perfectly. Comments:
Bontems,Paris, circa 1890,this very model was shown in a vintage
photograph of the Geneva showroom of G. Baker and Troll, circa
1890; a petite single-dish version is in the Murtogh D. Guinness

rare automata epitomizes the luxury objects of the Gilded
Age,and is wonderfully preserved.
