Description
17"(43 cm.) h. x 15"w. x 5"d. Set within an ebonized wooden
frame is a lively hand-painted scene depicting the performance
of a traveling minstrel in a cozy home while a delighted woman
and her two cats watch. The scene is constructed dimensionally
with cut-out figures. When the string at the side is pulled the
action begins: both cats dance to and fro,the woman gently
sways her head side-to-side,and the the musician also sways his
head and strums his mandolin. A concealed cylinder musical
movement provides the tune. Condition: generally
excellent,well-preserved with vibrant colors and well-
functioning. Marks: (original Tharin paper label on back).
Comments: Xavier Tharin,Borel Successor,circa 1865,Tharin
deposed his unique system that simultaneously activated the
music and action,and as the paper label indicates was the
recipient of various medals of honor for that inventiion. Value
Points: charming homespun scene with beautifully painted
details,amusing and animated movements,clarity of
music,original label.
