Description
46"(117 cm.) h. x 26"w. x 13"d. A fretwork carved wooden model of a Gothic-style church
with gingerbread trim and two bell towers is set with a Black Forest-style clock and a
concealed 36-note,Swiss cartel musical movement that provides one of any eight melodies.
On the hour and the half-hour there is a parade of six of the twelve Apostles across the front
in a clockwise manner. The entire model and clock is displayed within its original wooden
framed glass case. Condition: structurally excellent, clock functions well, parade mechanism
needs very slight adjustment. Comments: the entire model and clock was made by Dr. Dwight
Hubbard in 1900 and presented to his wife Amelia for their anniversary. Dr. Hubbard had
been a physician for a coal mine company in Bradford,Pennsylvania until moving to Buffalo in
1885 and opening Hubbards Pharmacy specialized in patent medicines. In 1926 the clock
was gifted to Richard Walker Wright and in 1966 passed to the private collection of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Hall where it has remained until this day. Value Points: fine folk art rendition of
German churches such as Strasbourg with mechanical animated figures and carvings that
perform on the hour stroke, with provenance.
