30" (76 cm.) The adult man has paper mache portrait head with characterized features of Chinese man,oil-painted facial features, amber tinted complexion with blush detail, hinged jaw, double row of teeth, brown glass eyes, black human-hair moustache, brows and long queue, very expressively posed fingers, composition torso and legs in posed stance on shaped velvet covered flat base. He is wearing a fine green silk robe with rich embroidery details, black hat with beaded decorations, trousers, sandals, and carries an elaborately shaped opium pipe. Condition: generally excellent,well-functioning. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1880,he performs seven movements in a realistic vignette of a connoisseur opium smoker: while turning his head majestically upward and then left to right,he raises the pipe to his mouth, opens his mouth as though inhaling, closes and opens his eyes and raises his left hand as though to signal his pleasure, and then exhales. Value Points: rare early automaton with superb detail of presentation and movements.
