Description
30" (76 cm.) The adult man has paper mache portrait head with
characterized features of Chinese man,oil-painted facial
features,amber tinted complexion with blush detail,hinged
jaw,double row of teeth,brown glass eyes,black human-hair
moustache,brows and long queue,very expressively posed
fingers,composition torso and legs in posed stance on shaped
velvet covered flat base. He is wearing a fine green silk robe with
rich embroidery details,black hat with beaded
decorations,trousers,sandals,and carries an elaborately shaped
opium pipe. Condition: generally excellent,well-functioning.
Comments: Gustav Vichy,circa 1880,he performs seven
movements in a realistic vignette of a connoisseur opium
smoker: while turning his head majestically upward and then left
to right,he raises the pipe to his mouth,opens his mouth as
though inhaling,closes and opens his eyes and raises his left
hand as though to signal his pleasure,and then exhales. Value
Points: rare early automaton with superb detail of presentation
and movements.
