Description
20"(51 cm.) l. x 7"h. x 10"d. Presented in a beautiful fruitwood
case with honey-warm finish,the musical movement features a
tune selector/indicator and a decorative zither attachment with a
cast metal lever control in the form of a musical lyre. The tune
label on the inside lid is decorated with the Mermod Freres
company emblem and an illustration of cherubs playing
instruments or frolicking about. The twelve tunes listed on the
label include "Sweet Rosie" "Grady"by Maude Nugent and "El
Capitan"by John Phillip Sousa,the best known of that American
composer and conductor's rousing marches,both appearing in
1896,the exact date that the serial number of the music
box,#80859,indicates when the box was produced and
indicating how up-to-date the offerings were. Made by Mermod
Freres of Ste-Croix,Switzerland,1896,the movement was
mounted and sold by their New York agent,Jacot & Sons,whose
name appeared on the Patented Safety Check component of the
mechanism. Excellent condition of the music mechanism and
cabinet.
